Our brief was to create a radio programme to be broadcasted on a community radio station called SheffieldLive. The purpose of our radio show is to entertain, we have done this by basing our show around popular music aimed at our audience and playing this to entertain the audience. We decided to aim our show at an ABC1 audience with both male and females, we have decided this as there are not many radio stations that
appeal to higher class teenage audience which provided a gap in the market, our programme target this audience based on content, adverts, topics and competitions we have included within our radio programme. Our programme is called Rad Radio, we choose this name to appeal to a younger audience as it is a slang word used and that they might recognise, this was to give connotations of being cool representing the style and music on our show. Our show included the latest pop music, quiz’s,
interviews, news and competitions, this content fitted with our target audience
and conventions of this type of program. As this is aimed at teenagers we wanted to keep them up to date with the latest news and celebrity gossip as well as
allowing them to compete in competitions to win prizes, which could have attracted more of an audience and money from phone-ins. We also included interviews from local artists/bands such as Kaidawg and people to get the view of the wide
range of people living in Sheffield, by interviewing these we wanted promote their
band to the local community. Even though SheffieldLive is a community radio we wanted to run an a commercial programme to get revenue from sponsors and adverts, this is a common convention of radio programmes like ours. I think our content of music, interviews and gossip fits with both the target audience and the conventions of our genre of radio show. Our show was structured to meet conventions of other radio shows like ours, first we introduced the presenter and told the audience what the show would consist of, then we did a traffic and news update which is important in drivetime shows as it keep the audience up to date. We planned these updates to be every 15 minutes which allowed the audience to keep informed on their journey. As our show was based around music we played consist popular music throughout and our completion was music related also. The flow of our show was consistent with other radio shows like ours as we included gossip, news, music and adverts at scheduled times to fit the purpose of the programme.
A strength of our final show is that it is entertaining for the audience, we tried to include interesting elements such as the celebrity guest and the phone-in competition. This would be interesting for the audience as they could get involved. I also think our radio show sounds professional, this was hard as we needed to script our show but make it sound as natural as possible. By including an interview this added an element to our show which broke up the show as it wasn't just music, this was advantageous to us as it will keep the audience interested
A weakness of our show was that the presenter conversation didn't flow as well as we initially wanted, to correct this it involved a lot of editing, this happened because we had to record each sentence separately to avoid any messing up and to make the show easier to edit. This could have been improved if we didn't a continuous show with two mics (like a real radio) as using one mic proved hard when recording conversations. I think we could further improve our show by adding real advertisements in there, this is because we had to create our own adverts to put in our show which may have made it look less professional. We improved the show from the first draft by changing the monochannels in Audition, this was needed to ensure the sound levels were correct and it wasn't only coming out of one side, this is issue was due to a technical error while recording although could be fixed easily. Another improvement we made during editing was to add in more jingles, our initial version only played the jingle at the beginning of the show, we decided to change this so that we had a longer jingle at the beginning and shorter ones before songs and advert breaks. We decided to change this as after researching similar radio programmes we found this to be a popular convention, we also did this so that when an audience tune in halfway through the programme they are still aware of what programme they are listening to which may make then tune in next time if they enjoy the show.
