LO4: Evaluating content and audio levels (D2)

Our brief was to create a radio programme to be broadcasted on a community radio station called SheffieldLive. The purpose of our radio show is to entertain, we have done this by basing our show around popular music aimed at our audience and playing this to entertain the audience. We decided to aim our show at an ABC1 audience with both male and females, we have decided this as there are not many radio stations that appeal to higher class teenage audience which provided a gap in the market, our programme target this audience based on content, adverts, topics and competitions we have included within our radio programme. Our programme is called Rad Radio, we choose this name to appeal to a younger audience as it is a slang word used and that they might recognise, this was to give connotations of being cool representing the style and music on our show. Our show included the latest pop music, quiz’s, interviews, news and competitions, this content fitted with our target audience and conventions of this type of program. As this is aimed at teenagers we wanted to keep them up to date with the latest news and celebrity gossip as well as allowing them to compete in competitions to win prizes, which could have attracted more of an audience and money from phone-ins. We also included interviews from local artists/bands such as Kaidawg and people to get the view of the wide range of people living in Sheffield, by interviewing these we wanted promote their band to the local community. Even though SheffieldLive is a community radio we wanted to run an a commercial programme to get revenue from sponsors and adverts, this is a common convention of radio programmes like ours. I think our content of music, interviews and gossip fits with both the target audience and the conventions of our genre of radio show. Our show was structured to meet conventions of other radio shows like ours, first we introduced the presenter and told the audience what the show would consist of, then we did a traffic and news update which is important in drivetime shows as it keep the audience up to date. We planned these updates to be every 15 minutes which allowed the audience to keep informed on their journey. As our show was based around music we played consist popular music throughout and our completion was music related also. The flow of our show was consistent with other radio shows like ours as we included gossip, news, music and adverts at scheduled times to fit the purpose of the programme.

A strength of our final show is that it is entertaining for the audience, we tried to include interesting elements such as the celebrity guest and the phone-in competition. This would be interesting for the audience as they could get involved. I also think our radio show sounds professional, this was hard as we needed to script our show but make it sound as natural as possible. By including an interview this added an element to our show which broke up the show as it wasn't just music, this was advantageous to us as it will keep the audience interested

A weakness of our show was that the presenter conversation didn't flow as well as we initially wanted, to correct this it involved a lot of editing, this happened because we had to record each sentence separately to avoid any messing up and to make the show easier to edit. This could have been improved if we didn't a continuous show with two mics (like a real radio) as using one mic proved hard when recording conversations. I think we could further improve our show by adding real advertisements in there, this is because we had to create our own adverts to put in our show which may have made it look less professional. We improved the show from the first draft by changing the monochannels in Audition, this was needed to ensure the sound levels were correct and it wasn't only coming out of one side, this is issue was due to a technical error while recording although could be fixed easily. Another improvement we made during editing was to add in more jingles, our initial version only played the jingle at the beginning of the show, we decided to change this so that we had a longer jingle at the beginning and shorter ones before songs and advert breaks. We decided to change this as after researching similar radio programmes we found this to be a popular convention, we also did this so that when an audience tune in halfway through the programme they are still aware of what programme they are listening to which may make then tune in next time if they enjoy the show.

LO4: Offline edit

We produced an offline edit which consisted of the rough order with no sounds effects or editing. from this we see we need to add in the songs which will be downloaded fro. youtube and also add in the jingle/sound effects to make the radio more interesting.

LO4: Editing Roles

We all recorded the content together, we recorded using the sound booth and recorded in sessions as we had interviews and phone-ins to record.

Matt gather the sound off youtube to use in our radio, we all recorded the jingle and adverts together to feature as a part of our programme.

Part one ( to 3.00 ) edited by Abbie
Part two ( to 6:00 ) edited by Matt
Part three ( to 9:17 )  edited by Fran

LO4: Evidence of editing and exporting

As we recorded content straight onto garage band most the content was already in place, to edit we also used garage band to move and cut clips to that they fit and conversation between the presenters flowed. next we added sound effects and music, these were added from the garage band gallery. We used these sounds in both adverts and Kaidawg rap.  Finally we imported music track as that is what our radio show is about, we downloaded these from YouTube  and inserted a 10 second clip into our radio show. By editing in the music this helped us meet the convention of our show, this is because our show is mainly based around music and so it would not fit the purpose without any music in it, we also choice up-to-date pop music which fits with our target audience of teenagers as this is the music they are likely to listen to. Our jingle that we edited using upbeat music and sound effects can help get the audiences energy up, this is because our show is a drivetime show and so the audience their energy boosted after a day at school/college or work.

When exporting we first had export off GarageBand into audition, this was to change the audio levels due to the microphone, we had to change this so that the sound came our of both sides not just one, we did this by extracting the channels to mono files in audition. Next in order to upload this to youtube it needed to be converted into MP4 and so had to be exported out of premier as an MP4.

LO3: Treatment

Rad Radio Treatment

Title:

Our show is called rad radio, this is because it is a chatty pop music programme aimed at teenagers and so this name will be an catchy fun name for our programme.

Medium:

We have decided to make a radio station which plays popular music aimed at an ABC1 audience and a both male and female audience. We have chosen to do this as there are not many radio stations that appeal to higher class teenage audience.

Proposed content:

Rad Radio will include the latest pop music, quiz’s, interviews, news and competitions, this content fits with our target audience and conventions of this type of program. As this is aimed at teenagers we want to keep them up to date with the latest news and celebrity gossip as well as allowing them to compete in competitions to win prizes. We want to also include interviews from local artists/bands and people to get the view of the wide range of people living in Sheffield, by interviewing these we can promote their band to the local community.

(The first 30 minutes running order)

3:05 News

3:07 Music

3:12 Presenters talking

3:16 Music

3:20 adverts

3:23 Weather

3:25 News

3:27 Music

3:30 Presenters talking

Scheduling:

Our programme is scheduled in drive time hours between the hours of 3pm – 6pm, this will target our audience as they will hopefully be finishing school/ university around this time and are most likely to be listening on their way home.

Target Audience:

we want to play pop/top hits music as it allows a wide audience, our audience will be ABC1 15-30 year-olds, We want a ABC1 audience as using sponsors such as CityTaxi and Fret magazine as they are local companies, this means they will need a disposable income in order to use these services. We will play music such as Rhianna and Drake as it is what the target audience is interested in, we have scheduled our programme in the drive-time as we think it is when our target audience is most likely to listen to the radio.

Key Personnel:

As part of our radio programme we are using 2 presenters, this is because we want our show to be chatty and informal, this is important as it helps the audience connect with the show which could make them want to listen to the show. We also need sound editors when creating sound effects for the programme which are used to make it more interesting and entertain the audience more.

Health & Safety:

In the recording studio it could be dangerous because of all the wires we'll have from the microphone, the recording system and the Mac computer, these will all be tripping hazards and the sound booth where it’s quite small if you do trip you're likely to hurt yourself. Sound levels are also important as if we accidentally have the sound really loud it could damage the hearing of anyone using the headphones or near  the speakers. We also need to look after the equipment as well as ourselves as it costs a lot and damage can easily be avoided in most situations.

Hardware and software:

For our radio programme we will need software such as a digital mixing desk with controls to control adverts/volume/ microphones to fade in and out, we can use GarageBand to do this wile editing. We will also need software such as GarageBand to edit the Jingle or music audio files together using WAV and FLAC as they are high quality and lossless. To record out show we need hardware such as a computer, microphone, speakers and mixing desk, this is based on research i have down of technologies needed. We need this inorder to make our shows as professional as possible.

Audio Assets:

Rad Radio will use assets taken from separate websites, we have looked on freesounds.com which use the creativecommons licence meaning we’re able to use the sounds and music for free on our show as it is royalty free. We also looked on Incompetech.com which uses the creativecommons licence also meaning we can use the music for free however none of the songs appealed to us so we’re just going to use songs from freesounds.com. We will also use loops on garage band to create some if the songs used in our radio programme this is also royalty free therefore no licencing will need to Be payed to use the loops and they are good quality so they will be useful to use in our broadcast.

Budget:

We’ll be getting the equipment hire and studio for free which takes a large amount off the budget, we get this for free as we’re members of UTC Sheffield and they’ll allow us to use the equipment for free. Licencing would cost a lot however we’re using royalty free music and sound effects meaning we’re aloud to use them for free. The songs we play we’ll need a licence for therefore this is really the only thing we have to pay for and it would be quite expensive. Another thing we would have to pay for is the singer Kaidawg to do the interview however he has agreed to do it for free.

Funding:

We will get most of our funding from advertisements as they will want to be advertised on our show therefore they are willing to pay us to broadcast their advertisements. Another thing we can use to get money is sponsorships as someone might want to sponsor a specific part of our show, an example would be a holiday company sponsoring the section of the show where we have a quiz where if they get all the questions right they win a holiday.
